Open Access Publishing

The University of Eastern Piedmont promotes open access to scientific literature in accordance with the provisions of its Statute and as a signatory of the Messina Declaration. For this purpose, it has adopted a University Policy on Open Access (Policy di Ateneo sull’Open Access). Further information is available on the web pages of the University Library System.

What is an open access publication?

A publication is open access if it is digital, online, free of charge, and free from most of the legal and commercial restrictions dictated by licenses. Thanks to the consent of the copyright owner, it can be consulted free of charge and can be used and enjoyed in different ways as long as its intellectual paternity is recognized.

For more information on open access publication methods (Gold road, Green road, transformative contracts) see the page OA Publishing by the University Library System.

IRIS UPO university archive

The University of Eastern Piedmont uses its own IRIS UPO Institutional Archive for the implementation of the OA policy.

  • The Author creates a datasheet in IRIS UPO, where the electronic and / or printed version of his/her work is available. The Author must enter in the Archive:
  • the metadata of the work (at least the minimum mandatory fields in the form, marked by an asterisk), which will always be visible with open access. In the case of monographs, the metadata must also include index and abstract
  • the digital copy of the work in the version permitted by the publisher for open access: in the editorial version, if permitted by the publisher, or in the digital version stated (postprint). The pre-refereed version (pre-print) must be uploaded if other versions of the work are not allowed, or it can be uploaded in addition, at the discretion of the Author
  • an access policy, among those present: Open Access, archive managers only, only recognized users (i.e., those who have an IRIS UPO account) or embargo. In the latter case, when explicitly provided by the publisher (information available either in SHERPA / RoMEO for periodicals or already in the possession of the Author), the embargo end date must be indicated. At the end of the period, the work will be offered with open access automatically by the system, without the need for further actions by the Author.

In compliance with the purposes of this policy regarding the promotion and dissemination of scientific culture, the Author is given the right to upload the digital copy of the work and choose the closed access option (recognized authors or only archive managers) only in cases where the publisher does not grant any type of deposit in the institutional archives or there are editorial and limitations for the transfer of part or all of the rights.

Self-archiving does not change publishing habits. You can continue to publish in the journals generally used, reserving the opportunity to self-archive your work, which thus becomes immediately available for everyone and at no cost, always in compliance with the copyright policies of the publishers

Intellectual paternity (moral rights) is indispensable. As regards, instead, the rights of use, in order to self-archive it is necessary to transfer only those few rights that are necessary for the online distribution and conservation of the document; furthermore, this transfer is not exclusive. Publishing on the institutional archive does not preclude the possibility of disseminating one's work to other locations.
