5. Curricular internship/work placement

The didactic plan of the Master’s course may include an internship/work placement.

If the student has difficulty finding a host, he/she should inform the Manager of the Master’s degree by email and the Master’s Office.

Please note that the hours of internship must be completed in full.

The internship can last one year at most.

Procedure for launching an Internship/Work placement

The student identifies a host and makes contact directly, supplying the link to the page about the Master’s internship and the email address of the contact person Angelica Venturini.

The host institute must complete the accreditation procedure on the university website before the agreement is drafted, if no accreditation already exists (see the attached instructions Online Services for companies – How to access the University Internships Portal).

While the agreement is being drafted, the student must complete the Internship activation request form, attaching a clear description of the person who will act as tutor in the company and the form signed by Manager of the Master’s degree, who authorises the internship (here in the Attachments).

After signing the agreement, the training project will be drawn up on the basis of the data entered into the system. The document will be sent to the student and must be signed in triplicate in original:

  • by the student
  • by the Legal Representative of the Host Organization (or delegate)
  • by the Manager of our Department.

Please note that the internship may start only after the project has been signed by everyone.

Interns must adapt to the internal rules defined by each company, follow the guidelines adopted by the Piedmont Regional Coordination Committee (Co.Re.Co) and carry out, before the start of the internship, the health and safety training course for workers and those equivalent to workers with a low, medium or high risk level, corresponding to the activity to be carried out; it is necessary for the interested party to verify precisely which type of course is required by the Host Institution in order to carry out the internship in the identified Service/Office.

The university offers the following courses so that they can be completed before starting the internship; the interested party must send an email with the subject "STARTING MASTER’S INTERNSHIP" to prevsic@uniupo.it (cc-ing the Master’s Office contact person) to gain access to the online courses.

Available courses:

  • Low-risk activities: general training course (4 hours) on Health and Safety for Workers (art. 37 Legislative Decree 81/08) plus specific low-risk training course (also 4 hours), which are required to enter companies where normal office work is carried out (by way of example and not limited to: administrative, accounting, insurance offices); if the student has already followed equivalent courses, he/she can forward the certificate to the email address prevsic@uniupo.it for the assessment of conformity and therefore possibly be exempted from following the courses mentioned above (in email communications, please also copy in the Master’s Office).
  • for those who must carry out activities in healthcare facilities, the High-Risk Healthcare Course (16 hours) validated by the Piedmont Region is available online, including both GENERAL TRAINING and SPECIFIC TRAINING on health and safety for equivalent workers (art. 37 of Legislative Decree 81/08) – High-risk - ATECO 2007 Q 86 (HEALTH) sector. ATTENTION: the available course is in a single 'package' therefore even those who have already completed the Health and Safety in the Workplace Course - General Training and Specific Low-Risk Training for Workers and Equivalent will have to redo the entire course in its entirety. 16 hour course; those who have already attended similar courses (High Health Risk, 16 hours) must send the certificate for assessment of conformity to the Head of Prevention and Protection Service of the structure where the activity will be carried out (in email communications please copy in also the Master’s Office).

N.B.  If the Host Institution requests a course other than those offered by our University, it will have to guarantee (in the start-up phase of the internship) adequate information and training on health and safety in the workplace pursuant to articles. 36 and 37 of Legislative Decree 81/2008.

During the Internship/Work Placement

The intern is assisted by a company tutor/supervisor, who will certify (through specific documentation) the attendance of the student during the internship.

Internship Timetable

The student is required to respect the timetable agreed with the Tutor, without exceeding 8 hours per day; if the day exceeds 6 hours, there must be a break of at least 30 minutes.

The internship hours must be done separately and in addition to working hours, therefore outside the time stamped as service (the same hour cannot be considered as an internship and as work).

The hours of attendance are recorded through an attendance register which will be stored at the internship site, must be filled in by the student, and must be signed by the Tutor; at the end of the experience, the original register must be delivered to the Master’s Office.

Please remember that the register is an official document for which the use of Tipp-ex and/or other concealing correctors is prohibited: in the event of an error, draw a line so that what was previously indicated is still legible and write down the correct data.

Location of the Internship

If the student moves from the address (or addresses) indicated as the internship location(s), he/she must communicate this via email to the Master’s Office for insurance purposes; activities carried out remotely are excluded.

Extension of Master’s internship

If it is necessary to extend the internship period, the student is invited to submit the "request for variation of Master’s internship", at least one week in advance of the scheduled deadline, by completing the relevant form and sending it via email to the Master’s Office.

At the end of the Internship/Placement

Deadlines for submission of original attendance register at the end of the internship

The documentation and attendance registers needed for recognition of the activity in question must be submitted 3 months before graduation.

Documentation necessary for recognition of internship/placement

In order to have the activity approved, it is necessary to send the following documents to the Master’s Office contact person:

  • attendance registers with original signatures, including those of Company Tutor and Manager of the Master’s programme
  • final report on activity carried out (the attachments below include instructions for drafting the report), signed and dated

Recognition of work activity

In some cases, it is possible that work activity may be recognised in place of the internship/placement.

For professional internships (duration minimum 500 hours), this is not possible.

For recognition of work activity, the student must complete the request form Form for recognition of work activity.
