h) Internships and Job Placements (students)
Degree course Literature - Vercelli (Binational Degree) - academic year 23/24
Internships and job placements are periods of "practical activity" that, as a student or recent graduate, you can carry out in companies, public bodies or in freelance contexts.
These are experiences aimed at:
- gaining experience "in the field" ‒ consolidating, verifying and expanding the knowledge acquired during the years of classroom study
- promoting and preparing for entrance into the world of work.
To this end, the Department of Humanities, delegated by the University, stipulates specific agreements with host institutions and companies.
The internship manager for the course (Dr. Federico Favi federico.favi@uniupo.it) arranges the training project to be followed, together with the student and host tutor. The Internship and Job Placement Office Sabrina Burocco (Servizio agli Studenti Orientamento & Job Placement, via Duomo 6 - tel. 0161 261559) deals with all the necessary administrative procedures.
As part of the training activities envisaged by the course and study plan, internships and job placements can be recognised for credits as "Other activities" (in the third year) or be left up to the student's own choice. Finally, training and career internships can be activated within 12 months of graduation. The University has more than 5,000 agreements in place with companies, public bodies and freelancers.
Among the agreements of particular interest for the Course of Humanities, we highlight those with the Accademia della Crusca, universities, middle and high schools, libraries, museums and superintendencies, local and supra-local territorial bodies (Regional Council of Piedmont, Municipalities), newspapers, and publishing houses. Students Area
Curricular internship (with credit recognition): the Course includes the internship among the "Other activities" area, within the scope of "credits reserved by the University for activities art. 10, subsection 5, letter d", in the last year of the course. Any student interested in this option must include it in the year in which these activities are envisaged in the option sheet. 3 training credits are attributed to the 75-hour internship. The credits are approved by the Course Council at the end of the student's internship experience and after the student has submitted all the required documentation (see attachment). The Course Council meets periodically according to an annual calendar and upon convocation by the Chair.
Voluntary internship (with or without credit recognition): the student can carry out a voluntary internship. In this case, the duration of the internship is left up to the student; however, it cannot be less than 1 month or more than 12 months. The internship must necessarily be completed before graduating. The student can request recognition of credits at the end of the experience. The credits are recognised by the Course Council after analysing the documentation presented by the student. 3 training credits are awarded for an internship lasting at least 75 hours. These credits are considered approved as excess credits.
Internship abroad: the Department, together with the University, encourages international mobility also aimed at carrying out an internship (Erasmus Placement programme, CRUI Foundation, Master of Talents).
Exemption from Internship: those who perform, or have performed, work in the Public Administration sector or private company consistent with the training course in Humanities can submit a request for recognition of exemption from the curricular internship. The minimum duration of work must be one month and more than 75 hours in total. The work tasks performed by the student must be relevant to the course of study in Humanities and require skills comparable to those that can be acquired with a three-year university degree.
The documentation to be presented for exemption from the internship is as follows:
- Credit approval request form for work activity (form downloadable in the attachment "Exemption Form")
- Student's report on the work activity carried out or in progress (see Guidelines downloadable in the attachment "Exemption Form")
For activities within the Public Administration sector:
- Declaration in lieu of the deed of notoriety pursuant to Presidential Decree 445/2000 and completed by the student (form downloadable in the attachment "Exemption Form")
For activities in the private sector:
- Certificate of service, on letterhead paper of company where the student is carrying/carried out the work. The document, drawn up by the company, must contain an indication of the date of hiring, the weekly hours worked and the tasks assigned. If the activity was carried out in the past, it is also necessary to indicate the date and cause of termination of the relationship.
The request for exemption from the internship will be subject to approval by the Humanities Course Council (first Council convened after the date of delivery of the documents). The Course Council meets periodically according to an annual calendar and upon convocation by the Chair. For information or doubts, contact the internship coordinator of the Course (prof. Graduates Area
The Job Placement service is active for all graduates, to assist their entry into the world of work.
Training and orientation internship: graduates have the opportunity to carry out an internship in institutions or companies. The legislation currently in force provides that training and orientation internships can be activated: within 12 months of graduation; for a maximum duration of 6 months.
Activation procedure and forms for internships and placements
The student must contact the internship coordinator of the Humanities Course (Prof. Afferni, raffaella.afferni@uniupo.it) to define the activity covered by the internship or placement and identify the host organisation/company.
Curricular internship (with credit recognition): the student who intends to carry out a curricular internship or placement must have included the internship among "Other activities" on the third-year option sheet. At the time of the interview with the teacher, the student must present:
- copy of the third-year option form stating the choice of internship among "Other activities" as "Credits reserved by the University for the activities Art. 10, subsection 5, letter d”
- list of exams taken with the related grades

Voluntary internship: at the interview with the teacher, the student must present:

Once the host organisation/company has been identified, the internship coordinator for the study course, the host tutor and the student define the specific training project together. This project must be consistent with the Humanities programme and state the educational objectives of the internship, the methods of carrying it out, the activities envisaged, and the skills, knowledge and skills to be acquired.
Before starting the internship, you must complete the online course on Health and Safety in the Workplace. In order to obtain the access key to the course, the student must send an email with the subject "AVVIO STAGE (STARTING INTERNSHIP)" to the address: prevsic@uniupo.it. The student will receive instructions for accessing the course from the Safety, Prevention and Protection Sector. Upon completion of the course, the student will obtain the relevant certificate of completion.
To start the internship, the student must contact the Internship and Job Placement Service: Sabrina Burocco (Student Careers Guidance & Job Placement Service, via Duomo 6 - tel. 0161 261559) and deliver the required administrative documentation:
- copy of the third-year option sheet with the choice of internship stated among "Other activities", as "Credits reserved by the University for the activities art. 10, subsection 5, letter d” (only for the curricular internship)
- list of exams taken with the related grades
- authorisation form to carry out the internship signed by the internship coordinator
- copy of the certificate of completion of the online course on Health and Safety in the Workplace
The internship can be started within 15 days of delivery of the administrative documentation to the Internship and Job Placement Service. Failure to deliver all the required documents means the internship cannot start. The training project will be sent in electronic format to the Internship and Job Placement Service by the course’s internship contact teacher.
Implementation and conclusion of internship
During the internship activity, the student is required to complete the attendance register promptly and regularly. The register must be signed by the host tutor and can be downloaded here (attached). At the end of the internship, the student is required to present a final report on the activity carried out. Drafting the report is mandatory in the case of both curricular and voluntary internships. To prepare the final report, it is recommended to follow the instructions contained in the short manual that can be downloaded here (attached).
All University students are also required to complete the internship evaluation questionnaire, which is available from the online services section by choosing the menu: "INTERNSHIPS AND PLACEMENTS (TIROCINI E STAGE)" - "INTERNSHIPS MANAGEMENT" - "EVALUATION (GESTIONE TIROCINI – VALUTAZIONE)". Upon delivery of the final internship documentation, the administrative office will verify that the questionnaire has been completed.
For recognition of the internship (and any training credits if it is a curricular internship) the student must submit the following documentation to the Department's Internship and Job Placement Office:
- End of internship report (of the student)
- Attendance register filled in and signed by the host tutor
- End of internship report from the host organisation/company (on headed paper and signed by the coordinator).
Upon delivery of the final internship documentation, the administrative office will also verify that the internship evaluation questionnaire has been completed. The original documentation must be submitted no later than 30 days after the end of the internship (last day indicated in the attendance register). The Department's administrative secretariat will only accept the complete documentation and will forward it to the Chair and the Course’s internship coordinator. The documents will be submitted for approval by the Humanities Course Council (first Council convened after the date of delivery of the documents). The Course Council meets periodically according to an annual calendar and upon convocation by the Chair. You will then be able to check the outcome of the internship and credit approval on the University portal under "Online services for students".
